Marshchapel Churchyard Group |
The Churchyard Group meets most weeks during the kinder months of the year and
has made a huge difference to what was until recently a minor jungle. We were initially encouraged by a visit from Fiona Battle from the `Gods Acre' scheme who was full of praise for the churchyard and our efforts to nurture wildlife by conserving different habitats (brambles, nettles, log piles, thistle beds and different wild flower areas), while still being aware of the needs of relatives visiting graves who may appreciate a more ordered environment. We have transformed the churchyard - but in a way that you would hardly notice unless you looked closely. It is still, to all appearances, a quiet and tidy country churchyard. However, it now incorporates a number of zones agreeable to all sorts of plants and animals and there is an attractive churchyard trail pointing out some of the more interesting features. Currently, we are continuing to clear older overgrown kerbed graves in the north churchyard and fill in between them with low ground cover plants. Any offers of these will be gratefully received. We now meet on Thursday afternoons from 2 pm onwards and anyone is most welcome to come along to help.
